Knaresborough and District Men's Forum: FAMILY trees were the subject of this week’s talk, which was given by Jeremy Stuehmeyer, a professional genealogist.
Mr Stuehmeyer gave us a whistle stop tour of do's and don’ts in the compilation of a family tree, interspersed with examples from his researches into his own ancestry which took him from Germany to America and, of course, throughout Britain.
This was an excellent talk and members were very grateful for a
most interesting and entertaining morning.
The Forum, for retired and semi-retired men, meets on Tuesdays
at 10am for 10.30am in the Assembly Room of Knaresborough House.

June 24th 2009
Earlier on this year I arranged a BIG Thorp Family Gathering from '9ish generations of descendants' in Preston Candover Hampshire (Nr Winchester) on June 24th - for nearly 40 'cousins' from all over the UK, New Zealand and USA to attend.
It really started out as a 'would you like to meet up' with my three New Zealand
cousins - but that soon changed & I was promoted as Director of Operations!! Thanks !!
So, from memory & looking back through all my thousand's of research notes, emails
and files over the years - I had to find anyone that ever mentioned Thorp & Hampshire
in one breath - calculating who was related to who, why and how, I printed off all of our
family tree & notes, emails were flying all over the globe, & together with my family
tree commissions, looking into a DNA and Genetics company as well - I was busy!!
I had a mega task on..
We all got to Preston Candover the home of our ancestors, talked till the cows
came home, walked over to the Old Church - which still had quite a few
very old Thorp headstones standing, & took lots of pictures.
I surprised everyone by showing photographs of all the old inhabitants and of our Thorps, numerous thatched cottages and businesses, including the working life in and around
the village too, also quite a few old family documents and wills, each and ever photograph had a date & was named. I explained the meaning of the documents and what can be gained by their contents too. All this with the aid of a digital projector laptop (PC) & PowerPoint Presentation
We also sent off oour DNA samples to explore our famly history
in a different light and check too if it really works.
It was a great day & great fun :-)
So I was a bit busy - but just how I like it.

DNA & Genetics
I have been looking into DNA & Genetics but I haven't had enough time and so it has
slowed down to a full stop sadly - I'm still hoping to get down to the DNA Labs at Manchester University - to look into DNA & Genetics & follow a sample through it's process, learn as much as I can surrounding the results and technicalities of doing a test and seeing how DNA compares and matches to other 'families' and related samples - cor' I hope I said that correctly!?

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE
I've been invited to do a talk for Who Do You Think You Are 'Live' 2010
down in Olympia London early next year - My talk would be based around my 25 years of research with links to DNA and Genetics and from this, ones family tree research will
get even more interesting, so fingers crossed :-)
(This has no connection to the research I did on Carol Vordermans family tree)
