BBC ANTIQUES ROADSHOW - HARROGATE Oct. 28th 2015
My day started straight away with an interview from BBC Radio York and Jonathan Cowap.
Thousands of people attended and everyone of course queued to get in with their array of artefacts, and it was great because I didn't have to queue (thanks to my immediate interview with Jonathan) at all to get into the Royal Hall with my Sinclair & Roberts family history and items, a quite heavy Chinese charger / bowl which turned out to be Japanese, and an old 1805 Napoleonic document which was sent to Hannah Cawood of Whixley in North Yorkshire... T'was lots of fun, very interesting, I met and had a quick chat with Fiona Bruce which was nice, and a great deal of the Antiques Roadshow Experts, also lots of nice people too throughout the day.

Plus we're starting a Genealogy & Family History based "Phone In" from April 2016 I've talked with Jonathan many times "on air" so it was brilliant to actually meet in person and talk face to face at the recording studio :-) Lots more to come....

DNA & Genetics
I have been looking into DNA & Genetics but I haven't had enough time and so it has slowed down to a full stop sadly - but I'm still hoping to get down to the DNA Labs at Manchester University one day - to look into DNA & Genetics & follow a sample through it's process, learn as much as I can surrounding the results and technicalities of doing a test and seeing how it relates and matches to other 'families' & related samples - cor' I hope I said that correctly!?
Thorp Family Gathering
Thorp Family Gathering
- Preston Candover - Hampshire -
June 24th, 2009
Earlier this year I arranged a BIG Thorp Family Gathering from '9ish generations of descendants' in Preston Candover Hampshire (Nr Winchester) on June 24th - for nearly 40 'cousins' from all over the UK, New Zealand and USA to attend.
It really started out as a 'would you like to meet up' with my three New Zealand cousins - but that soon changed & I was promoted as Director of Operations!
So, from memory & looking back through all my thousand's of research notes, emails and files from over the years - I had to find anyone that ever mentioned Thorp & Hampshire in one breath - calculating who was related to whom, why and how. I printed off our extensive family tree & notes, emails were flying all over the globe, & together with my family tree commissions, looking into a DNA and Genetics company as well - I was busy.... I had a mega task on...
We all got to Preston Candover the home of our ancestors, talked till the cows came home, walked over to the Old Church - which still has quite a few very old Thorp headstones standing, & we all took lots of pictures.
I surprised everyone by showing photographs of all the old inhabitants and of our Thorps, with numerous thatched cottages and businesses, including the working life in and around the village too, also quite a few old family documents and wills, each and every photograph had a date & was named. I explained the meaning of the documents and what can be gained by their contents too. All this with the aid of a digital projector, laptop (PC) & PowerPoint Presentation.
We also sent off our DNA samples to explore our famly history in a different light and check too if it really works.
It was a great day & great fun :-)
So I'm always busy 'hunting for' OR 'proving tales'...
but... that is just how I like it :-).
What do you know about your family's origins?
Do you know where your grandparents or your great grandparents are from? What did they do? Where did they live? Have you been told any family stories, did anyone go off to war, have you got a family Bible, or any old family papers or postcards, birth, marriage or death certificates, Wills, deeds or old photographs? These could all hold clues to your ancestors and your family history. |
